Five years ago, today – on Valentine’s Day – a gunman entered Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, a place dedicated to learning and raising young leaders, murdering 17 individuals and injuring 17 others. Rather than celebrating a day typically devoted to love and showing love to others, these families and the entire community were devastated, and the long-term impact continues. As school shootings continue to plague our nation, layered onto the mental health crisis that our school children are currently experiencing, it is imperative that we pay attention to these long-term effects and continue to find ways to support our youth as they develop to be our next generation. This support can come in the form of education and awareness about the mental health impact of mass violence and other traumatic events, support at the community and national level, referral and treatment of mental health symptoms as they arise, and most importantly, awareness of trauma cues that arise with each additional mass shooting.
Today, the National Mass Violence Victimization Resource Center joins with the Parkland community, as well as communities nationwide, to remember and honor the victims of the horrendous school shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School five years ago. We support you and will continue to support you as you face ongoing and changing challenges and consequences from this devastating crime.
